New beginnings: mentoring programs leveraging creative writing & performance art to help pave the way to a safe and fulfilling life after prison

how it works

Unchained has been delivering mentorship programmes for over 6 years as part of an integrated pathway to physical, psychological, legal and social emancipation for young people from the Black and Global Majority communities in the UK who have become incarcerated and are making their way through the Criminal Justice System.

We use creative writing activities to aid constructive and open expression allowing people to explore how they feel and better integrate themselves back into the communities around them.

The aim of our sessions is to progress the young people we work with along to group sessions or workshops as part of a 6 month programme where we hone work created as part of our creative writing exercises into finished pieces of performance art, ultimately to be delivered by our mentees at one of our Unchained live music and poetry events.

Alongside creative writing activities, we offer guidance and practical advice, focussing on 4 pillars - employment, environment, education & relationships - as we see these as the main factors that affect life after prison.

"Our job isn't to make people famous, it's about showing people how to communicate and express themselves gracefully and efficiently using culturally relevant artforms," Lady Unchained
