Unlocking the future: empowering life after prison

mentorship | advocacy | creative expression

what we do

Unchained facilitates the process of physical, psychological, legal and social emancipation for young people from the Black and Global Majority communities in the UK who have become incarcerated and are making their way through the Criminal Justice system.

We focus on 4 pillars - employment, environment, education relationships - as these are the main factors that affect life after prison.

Through a programme of mentorship and workshops that leverage creative writing and poetry as the primary tool for aiding constructive and open expression -  allowing people to explore how they feel, something they've often never had the opportunity to do - along with guidance and practical advice, we help these people to completely unchain themselves both metaphorically and literally in order to lead harmonious and productive lives, realise their full potential and integrate themselves back into the community.

Through our founder Lady Unchained, we provide a unique, lived-experience perspective on national and international platforms such as the BBC, ITV, the Guardian and TED X to provide a narrative on Criminal Justice Reform with the aim of helping to inform political discourse and policy making at a national level.

behind bars

In 2008, 21-year-old Unchained founderLady Unchained got involved in a fight in a club trying to protect her sister.

Serving 11 months of her prison sentence, her life changed completely.

Inside, Lady Unchained began to write while battling isolation, loneliness and the fear of being wrongly deported

These notes became powerful bars of poetry, capturing first-hand the broken justice system and the racism rooted within it.

Wide-awake poetry, Behind Bars traces how Lady Unchained's identity was irrevocably changed during her sentencing, time in prison and release.

Behind Bars proves there is life after prison.
