our aims

Unchained Voices is a podcast produced by Renegade Production on behalf of Unchained to contribute to and expand on national conversations around the criminal justice system in the UK as well as the experiences of people with lived experience of the UK criminal justice system and its prisons.

We also want to explore the power that creative writing and music has to influence culture and potentially even the choices people make, which is a key part of Lady Unchained's mission in terms of the mentoring and workshops she conducts at prisons in the UK.

The conversation around rehabilitation for ex-offenders and life after prison in general is a space that is growing rapidly and, content platforming people with lived experience - both in mainstream media and the podcast world - are becoming more and more common.

We want to contribute meaningfully and effectively to this discourse by occupying and owning a space as well as exemplifying a tone that is currently underrepresented across the current media landscape in the UK - Black intellectualism.

Current representatives of this include David Olusoga and Akala, but personalities like these are few and far between in the UK. The mainstream media in the UK is more comfortable with giving credence and authority to white voices on these topics while separating out Black voices into the sphere of “entertainment”.

The Unchained Voices podcast aims to explore how art and culture influence people and society as well as looking at the social and political issues surrounding the criminal justice system, while establishing the presence and importance of Black voices in socio-political thought and commentary at large.
